POST WORLD WAR II
We were born
Japanese had lost in the Mission of creating Asian common market Asia for Asian. The atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki is just like Russian winter to Napoleon and Hitler they failed to establish European Common Market as well.
Malaya is now Persekutuan Tanah Melayu . An idea of unity and nationality arise on the ashes of suffering of Second World War.The wealth in Japanese paper note evaporised at had no value . Lim Goh Tong on the road to wealth he claimed the iron junk Japanese left: iron still had it intrisic value as lands. However people continued working economy began to recover. Food rice and fish industry recover quickly as they were basic amminities which use local mainly bio resources. Happier years of hope and relieve . In those days I was born . That is 1951 almost the same day as Rashid Al Ghar(14 Feb),Shuib Hashim(16 Feb) and me 15 February were born. While Rashid has a Pakistani father born in small town ,Shuib and I born in Kuala Sanglang border a fishing village of Perlis and Kedah. Shuib in Perlis and myself in Kedah.Far away Hishammudin Rais born in village in Negeri Sembilan on 3 February. The geographic background and educational background make us different people in 1970s.Anwar Ibrahim in Charok Tok Kun 3 years earlier (august 1947) as compared to Fadzillah Md Arif two years later (1953). The later two childeren of middle class wedge earner while we were son of fishermen cum padi farmers.Abudance of food lack of paper currency.Little Japanese currencies had no value. So limited capital just everporated.
Childhood sickness
The age ignorant, poverty, malnutrition, sickness lack of health care facilities. I was a sick boy struggling between life and mortality: I survive but small scale though queit reasonably intelligent. Thank God. Inactive child develop good listening skill and be able to speak at 11 months old!!! I grew up and being told the age of Suffering during Japanese Occupation.People ate tapioca though fish and meat readily available product of nature blessing Allah Taala. Wedding feast surprisingly luxurious!!! Meat and tapioca almost like moden days steak and potato chips!!! But of course the menu is curry and whicte curry (masak putih)
Japanese surrender in 1945 after Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombeb. So desastrous that Hiro and Naga no saki no baki flat to ashes. We were born 6 years later. So we could only hear the stories of suffering, poverty, hungger and insecurity from our parent and elder. Kuala Sanglang though an important port and border passage and custom operation between Perlis and Kedah did not experience any combant. The war move so fast and few japanese soldier occupied Kuala Sanglang police station. Other than that not much event except some cultural shock that Japanese bathe in nude!!! However they leave some songs to Kampung Folk which I learn later from Mak Jah my neighbour:
"O thai te,shun nai de,no mete o you keba,o mena ka wa e o tali mena teh, uta uta tak suka nuri" I memorise the song without knowing the meaning. When I went to conference in Switzerland later in 1986 I sang the song to a young Japenese man he excited and lough but I still do know the meaning as he could not translate.
Stories of Japanese Era
During Japanese occupation the most historic thing is Perlis,Kedah,Kelantan and Teragganus were given to Thailand the Japanese Ally in 1941. Setui and Patani were given much earlier 1909 in exchange for railway project by British to Bangkok. The Malay state is just like properties it can be bought and sold!!!
Siamese occupation did not bring any drastic change except the populace see more elephants and Rambong shown in the villages. Basicall was a seasonal entaiment during dry harvest season after rice harvested. The most memorable incident was a case of a Malay maiden of Kuala Sangland infutuated to one of Siamese show man and follow the troopy. Soon when the villagers realised what happend the mobilised the kampung youths that follow the troopy and grabed back the maiden and take back to the village. Well how united were the Malays on those days in name of race , Islam and dignity. The ground is laid for the future UMNO.

Stories of Pre War Era
Prosperity Vs Poverty
Robber Years: 1918-1940
This period probably happend prewar era or in the twenties when they were few police personels available in Kuala Sanglang. Coastal areas wer more prosperious because of fish and paddy industries besides trading. Compare to inland areas where padi and fruits were seasonal product. So the youth from rural inland were under employed and influence by Thais probably gang up in organised robber gang. They probably targeted the traders but no one could be sure. The event often occured after padi harvest season. It is probably three factor. First being the padi field were dry so acessable to pedestrian gangssss by land, second prosperity among the community after the harvest ,third the inland use were not employed in padi planting yet for next six months when it started to rai again.
The robber just come in numbers to out numbers and out gun the police. My grandfather the local Penghulu then gathered all the belongings and valuebles of villagers and put in iron chest in Penghulu house and the community members rotated to guard the house.
When the robber came to Kuala Sanglang there was a shoot out with the police. People were adviced to lie down to avoid stray bullets. The attack the shops houses of Chinese traders. These robber may be instigated by marxist ideology for they came to rob the capitalist. But no body know about communism then until the war came in 1941 when unemployed Chinese joined British thus gathering the supply and weapons to fight against Japanese. It was this time that communist began to prosper as an ideology among Chinese in Malaya.
Salleh Tui Capatured
In 1909 ,part of Kedah Setui,Bukit were given to Thailand by British. Thailand named the Satun and Phuket. The population were mostly Malays and able to speak Thais . They were some of mixed blood and often called sam sam. Dispised for lack Islamic of religious knowledge and values. Salleh Tui was from Setui of sam sam lineage inspite of named Salleh (pious). He operated in Kedah taking advantage of the loose border control.
There were news that he operated in Kampong Sanglang 3 km from Kuala Sanglang my granfather former village.Penghulu were make known that this man hid in the junggle serrounding the village and police cannot shoot him as he had mistical power. So my granfather was called.
So my grandfather Penghulu Said went to the location. He shouted "surrender!!! I come in the name of the Sultan of Kedah!" Salleh Tui unable to speak Malay attack him with a sword parang lading and he shot the man in the leg and disarm the man using a weapon called "Che Pe". The robber was captured and send carried on a stretcher and taken by boat to Alor Star
Thief days: late 1950s
I still remember. "Kawar!,kawar!,kawar!......." somebody shouted a night. My farther grabed his bamboo spear and parang and went down to join the their chase. The theif just ran into the thick jungle behind the village and disappeared*. There was quite often theiy went up somebody house to steal something. While other occasion they stole chicken and cows. Cow were slaughtered and they took the vitals legs, liver and leave everything behind. During Japanese time they even stole clothings.
*Later it was told that the theift hide behind a lone Chinese farmer house. The Chinese knew but to scared or too smart to get involved.
Education
Religious Education?
When I was a boy my parent were contemplating to send me to Sekolah Pondok (Religious School).I was then in Sekolah Rakyat .I ask my mother later why she send me to school? She replied" kut kut dapat kerja -may be you get a job".She was telling my father that our children should not be like us- padi farmers/fisherman.
By stroke of luck my standard six sister advice my mother to send me to another school,Sek Kebangsaan Simpang Sanglang where they offer Special Malay Class exam. I moved to the school though I have to walk 4 miles a day every school day:rain or shine without umbrella.Later my mother provide a raincoat that we had to wait for rain after school to enjoy the coat!!!
English Education
After attending a Special Malay Class exam in Kangar School I was offered to study in Putra Primary School Special Malay Class 1.Though it only but with limited money and poor transportation the fe eling was like 50miles trip. You of often fell asleep while going home.Once I borrow an Australian Peace Corp bycycle to go home. Cannot afford to buy even a bycycle in those days.
Boarding School at young age
First few months I stayed in Simpang Empat 7 miles away at my cousin fiancee house and take a bus to school. Not long after that my father get a place in Derma School hostel though we have to walk 3 miles everyday. For next eight years I stayed in Derma School poor and under nourish still walking to Putra school for six years until form five then only admited to Derma English School where I took my MCE and SPM.
Scarcity , Poverty and thrifty
In the hostel you were really poor.My father pay was only RM50 per month then my hostel fee RM8.25 and bust fare RM1.20 and pocket money RM6-RM1.20=RM4.80. With 4.80 you have to buy tooth paste, soaps ,charcoal for ironing not much money left for foods. So during school break we just sit under bamboo bush talking to past our time.Too weak to hungry to be active in sport!!!
Higher Education
After passing MCE & SPM I really do not know what next.So open up a sundry shop as motivated by my mother. After few months was offered a place in form six science in Ibrahim School. After two years had been offered a place in Malayan Training College in Penang. After three month had a place in Univerity of Malaya failing to get into Medical Faculty end up in Agriculture. That is the destiny of next 35 years.
